A recently released video shows a teacher in Shahriar County hitting students with a belt. This video is not an exception, but occasionally similar incidents are reflected on social networks, causing a wave of hatred and disgust. For our generation, this disgust is a sign of change, a structural change in the value system of society. In the past, parents used to say to teachers: “My child’s bones are mine and his flesh is yours.” The implied meaning of this statement was that as long as the child doesn’t die, you can use physical punishment to discipline them. In this proverb, we can see the value of physical punishment in previous generations; at that time, they used to say “the teacher’s stick is like a flower, whoever doesn’t get hit is a donkey.” The owner of this pen once received a beating that still haunts their mind. We used to study at night, everyone was adults and I was a teenager. When the language teacher entered the class,
The teacher and principal who did not hit, displayed an exception, a culture of oppression and reliance on dictatorship, they sharpened politics and made it human, and this was implemented both in the family and in general. Although the development of urban culture and the emergence of the middle class undermined the legitimacy of this violent behavior, it could not completely eliminate it due to the remaining discourse of dictatorship; whether at the level of schools, detention centers, or on the streets and roads, remnants of this culture constantly emerge from a corner and are reflected in society.
Although very few cases may occur, we know that this phenomenon is more prevalent in our educational system and lives than we can imagine, and a continuous and determined struggle can cure this widespread disease.
But there are other reasons that have also contributed to these leftover problems and have exacerbated the issue; glorification of violence in various forms in public arenas, a huge class divide, and the growth of marginalization which leads to widespread deviance and a culture of lawlessness. Teachers who teach on the outskirts of cities, and that too with minimal wages, without even realizing that they cannot force rebellious and disobedient children from impoverished backgrounds to adhere to discipline through other means. Generally, they have not been trained in communication skills and even if they want to, they do not know how to do it. The system, until it is pressured by public opinion, does not show any sensitivity towards this issue and we can see that the minds of top managers are elsewhere when incidents of looting in the cultural fund occur. It is the responsibility of civil institutions and social networks to raise awareness among families, students, and even school staff in the outskirts of cities. But the problem can also be solved in another
The most important thing is to realize that both the teacher and the student are victims of punishment, and their behavior is rooted in thousands of factors that create a negative event, both hidden and visible. A child who is punished in school may also be exposed to violence in the streets and at home, just as a teacher who is constantly punished due to poverty and deprivation is forced to vent their anger in their workplace. Without fighting poverty and empty tables, the problem of punishment cannot be solved in isolation, although this understanding does not mean that efforts in this regard should be abandoned. A poverty-stricken child until adolescence can only acquire an identity through physical strength and displaying it, which makes the job difficult for schools. It is the responsibility of society to give these children the opportunity to gain identity through other means, such as sports. Instead of providing this opportunity within schools, clichéd advertisements for official values are promoted, which only further disappoints the audience.
One of the common problems that disrupts the personality of teachers and students is the contradiction between the values governing families and societies with schools. This contradiction disrupts both the emotional structure and the process of socialization of individuals and leads to abnormalities. Even the type of structure and its dilapidation and overcrowding in classrooms can contribute to the emergence of effective violence. For this reason, sociologists and researchers should conduct field studies to accurately and partially examine the reasons for this issue and publish their findings in connection with other social issues. Only with a complete understanding can the problem be solved. Universities and sociologists should be encouraged to conduct this study and use the power of social networks to control the problem based on the findings of this research.
