Examining the Threats and Opportunities of Artificial Intelligence for the Job Market in a Conversation with Ahmad Mirdari, Former Deputy Minister of Labor / Matin Mostafaei
Last week, the media outlet “Kuwait News” unveiled a female presenter who was created using “artificial intelligence”. The name of this presenter, who was dressed in a black coat and a white t-shirt, is “Faze”. She is expected to read online bulletins for her viewers. This trend is rapidly expanding and has affected various sectors of the economy, from services, industry, and agriculture to medicine, engineering, and art.
Artificial intelligence, or simply automation, refers to a process in which companies, algorithms, and machines replace humans in performing various tasks in a more precise and efficient manner. Currently, we are witnessing an increasing use of this approach in many industries, and many traditional jobs will largely disappear in the next 10 years in advanced countries. According to a report published by one of the research institutions in the United States, 25% of jobs in the United States will be at risk of being replaced in the next 10 years.
These days, the use of artificial intelligence has increased more than ever in the world, and with the introduction of products like ChatGPT, which is essentially an intelligent chatbot that can answer people’s questions in any field, many concerns have been raised about whether these robots will replace humans in various jobs in the near future or not. In this regard, we sat down with Dr. Ahmad Mirdari, an economist, former deputy minister of labor, and representative of the sixth parliament, to discuss this issue and examine whether artificial intelligence will really make us unemployed and what overall impact this innovation will have on the job market.
But before this.“سلام دنیا”
Hello world.
Instead of replacing jobs and eliminating them, we should ask why this tool has become so important.
Dr. Medri believes that one of the attractions of this tool is that conversing with a computer conveys an interesting feeling to humans; especially when chatting, the chatbot has the ability to continue the conversation by remembering previous chats and keeping a record of our conversations. At the same time, it can accurately understand the questions we ask and provide correct and precise answers.
Chat GPT has the capability to be responsive in all fields; from content creation and research to coding and language editing, and other areas. We can ask historical questions or even pose questions that do not have answers on the internet, and Chat GPT itself, through analysis, has reached those answers and its analysis is sometimes astonishing.
Furthermore, this tool has some reasoning capabilities and can reach the answer that the questioner desires by utilizing its information and knowledge.
He talks about his personal experience with artificial intelligence: “I myself have also come up with the idea of using chatbots; meaning an algorithm and method that suggested a solution to a problem that didn’t even exist before. Additionally, it can answer very specific questions that cannot be found through a simple Google search. Even if we search for the question on “Google Scholar”, we see that no research has been done on that topic. The combination of these three aspects has made it very interesting and has produced a very fascinating product.”

Chat JPT
Is it a new phenomenon?
Dr. Medri responds to this question by saying, “Although chatbot AI is considered a great advancement, it is actually an innovation built upon previous developments. We have had many of its components before, and now with artificial intelligence, they have become much stronger. We have had various products before, such as ones that could edit the English content we wrote. Or a product that could give us advice in a specific field and had given computers some level of reasoning power through the use of AI.”
He adds, “For example, we also have robots similar to Chatbot in specific fields that we can request to have a conversation with a character on the website, such as a psychologist who can answer our questions in the form of psychology. Or even be interested in talking to the character “Hitler” and artificial intelligence would respond to us in the form of Hitler.”
But now, all of these features and capabilities have been gathered in one product, making this JPT chat very attractive and beautiful; a complete package. This product was one of the next steps taken by artificial intelligence and now, with the use of algorithmic innovations, we have achieved it and sooner or later such a product would be produced.
When computers replace humans.
Former Deputy Minister of Labor emphasizes the role of artificial intelligence in the future growth and industrial development of countries, saying: “From the very beginning, the purpose of building computers was to automate tasks; meaning that instead of doing things manually, we entrust them to computers. Currently, we are in the fourth industrial revolution where artificial intelligence plays a very prominent role. When various industrial revolutions took place and their consequences continued for years, we witnessed significant changes in the job market and many professions underwent changes.”
He continues: “For example, in the 20th century with the invention of the automobile, barrels gradually disappeared and although it caused unemployment for barrel makers, new jobs such as drivers and mechanics were created. This trend can be seen in other industries as well and it is essentially the nature of technology that eventually jobs that are done manually or by humans will be entrusted to machines.”
Jobs that disappeared
Dr. Mederi, referring to the elimination of certain professions in different eras, said: “In the not-so-distant past, there were professions that now seem ridiculous to us; hundreds of years ago, there were people who would go around hitting the windows of people’s homes with sticks in the early hours of the morning to wake them up for work, but with the invention of alarm clocks, these people became unemployed. In the early days of basketball, the baskets were actually fruit baskets and every time a ball went in, people had to climb a ladder to retrieve it. Now, these jobs seem funny to us and eventually, the jobs we have now will also disappear, sooner or later.”
He added, “For example, in the discussion of sports, the profession of football refereeing is in great danger. We have seen in recent years how accurate offside calls are made with artificial intelligence and how easily various analyses can be made. It is unlikely that in the next few years, the role of the referee will be able to play a significant role on the field, and with the presence of VAR and the review of game images, the role of the referee will gradually become less and less important, and decisions will be made automatically and in the moment.”
New jobs that we should be waiting for.
The coincidence that will happen in the near or distant future is that new jobs will be created for humans. Jobs that just a year or two ago seemed very strange to us. Dr. Midri explained about this: “Currently, a job called “rapid engineering” has been added to the list of world jobs, which this person must know and know how to ask questions from artificial intelligence and how to lead the conversation with artificial intelligence and for example, how to give the text to artificial intelligence to get the desired image from it. In the future, we will see more jobs like this and we will have a very big transformation in this field.”
He continued: “Some new jobs may even seem intangible to us; for example, the job of psychology for robots. This means that artificial intelligence will be subject to psychology in the future. These may seem funny to us, but the world of the future will be so strange to us.”
Is anyone safe from this process?
Dr. Mederi referred to developments that take shape over time and cause changes in the form and nature of human phenomena. He emphasized, “Thanks to comprehensive advancements in the field of self-driving cars, drivers are also losing their jobs to a large extent. We must also mention the extensive progress of military drones, which can greatly reduce the need for military personnel; as we have seen in the war in Ukraine. With technologies like “Google Duplex”, even people like secretaries are being replaced and their tasks are being entrusted to digital assistants.”
He added, “We must also mention the progress of 3D printing technology, which will eventually overshadow a large portion of construction-related jobs and in the not-so-distant future, we will reach a point where different parts of buildings are manufactured in factories and only assembled on site.”
Reducing costs and increasing freedom of choice.
Dr. Medri mentioned the advantages of artificial intelligence and its effects on society and the economy of countries, and added: “Although this may cause concerns for some professions, the situation will not be so bad. First of all, job automation is good news for consumers. This reduces costs and increases the right to choose. This has a very positive impact on the economy as well. According to a report by a British financial services company, job automation will bring $15 trillion in added value to the global economy by 2030.”
But the main issue is about the distance between now and such a future. When automation destroys jobs comprehensively, governments are unsure of what they should do. In such times, we will likely witness an increase in poverty and even urban unrest. The destruction of jobs will surely be accompanied by widespread protests and this widespread anger will have consequences. In any case, such a storm will come sooner or later and we must prepare ourselves for this situation by learning new skills.
Does artificial intelligence surpass human social intelligence?
Dr. Ahmad Meidari, representative of the Sixth Parliament, referred to statistics presented at the 2020 World Economic Forum and said, “According to the report ‘Jobs of the Future 2020’ published by the World Economic Forum, it is expected that artificial intelligence will replace 85 million jobs worldwide by 2025. Although this number may seem alarming, the report also continues to state that AI will also create 97 million new jobs during this time period. Industries that will always need humans.”
This expert in the field of work and social welfare mentioned jobs that are safe from threats related to artificial intelligence and added: “We can be reassured that some jobs will never be replaced by AI. These are jobs that AI is not capable of imitating or replicating, ranging from creative fields to empathetic jobs, as well as complex political and strategic jobs.”
“Similarly, there will be a demand for human workers who can help us adapt to the new world with a greater presence of artificial intelligence. Some professions that still rely on human labor include writing, social activism, law, education, and AI training engineers. These fields may still benefit from advancements in AI in the future, but AI and robots cannot provide the empathy and social intelligence needed in these areas.”
What is our solution to not being unemployed?
Dr. Midri spoke about the solutions that individuals should consider for the strange and unfamiliar future that lies ahead with the emergence of artificial intelligence. He said, “In my opinion, people who work in creative fields should learn how to use these new tools.”
He continued, “These tools will become much more influential in the future; for example, this chat GPIT is currently a general tool that is active and covers all fields, but in the future, we will have specialized chats that will work in specific areas. So it will be very important for people to learn how to use these tools and how to have them at their disposal for their work.”
Mehdi had a recommendation about the future of children and teenagers’ careers: “Another important issue that unfortunately exists in Iranian society is that parents push their children towards careers that they themselves like or consider to be high-paying jobs. For example, they advise a ten-year-old child to definitely work in a career that has a high income in the future, and they try to secure that career for their child. But the important point here is that the future job market will be very different from what we imagine, and it is no longer like before where jobs from two hundred years ago were passed down from ancestors to descendants and reached future generations. In reality, many of the jobs that exist today may not even exist in five or ten years.”
We must raise a creative generation.
Former Deputy Minister of Social Welfare and Labor in his final remarks said: “Although our country is somewhat behind in the growth of technological and technological developments and the traditional service sector still has the largest share of employment, we must be prepared for this trend sooner or later and train the future generation to be more creative. All of this makes it better if we think about it, it might be better to push our children towards learning new issues so that they are constantly learning and mastering the process of “forgetting”; that is, they can forget the learned skill and learn a new skill at the right time.”
