Drinking wine or consuming alcoholic beverages is made up of two words, “sharab” and “khamr”. Sharab means drinking and khamr refers to a liquid that causes intoxication. Therefore, drinking wine refers to the use and consumption of alcoholic beverages – in terms of their intoxicating effects. Barley water is also considered an alcoholic beverage and even if it does not cause intoxication, drinking it is considered a sin and the punishment for consuming “intoxicants” is 80 lashes. It should be noted that injecting and inhaling alcoholic beverages is also considered a sin; therefore, only drinking and eating intoxicants is not considered drinking wine.
Proof of the crime of drinking wine
Drinking wine can be proven in three ways:
1- Confession
2- Testimony
3- Judge’s knowledge
