World Human Rights Day and Human Rights Defenders in Prison/ Pegaah Khoramgah

Peace Treaty – During World War II, when the United Nations Charter was being drafted, respect for human rights and certain political freedoms became a focus for representatives of various countries around the world. After some time,

United Nations

It was designed for these rights to be applicable everywhere and for all nations.

In continuation, the Human Rights Commission began its work in January 1947 AD and after a period of studying and examining the constitutions of countries and discussions in various commissions, it sent its findings in the form of a draft to the General Assembly. The aforementioned Assembly, on December 10, 1948 AD (19 Azar 1327), with 48 positive votes and 8 abstentions, adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and based on this, this day was named as World Human Rights Day.

In the poorest countries to the wealthiest, from the most unstable to the most secure, under any type of government and in all situations of war and peace, human rights must be respected and it is necessary that human rights activists in all societies strive to promote and protect human rights in order to achieve a more humane state.

In the human rights defenders declaration, the concept of human rights activism is very broad and encompasses a large population, including any individual or group of individuals who peacefully promote and defend human rights; from international organizations to individuals working in local communities. This activity can be individual or collective in nature.

Human rights activists, while engaged in defending the rights of their fellow human beings, are themselves at risk of severe violations of human rights by governments and, in some cases, terrorists. It is clear that improving the unsafe situation of human rights defenders, putting an end to their persecution and harassment, and ultimately freeing them unconditionally are among the first and most essential steps in addressing human rights. Without this, the government’s adherence and belief in international agreements and human rights treaties will not be possible.

Despite the importance of the activities of human rights defenders, which were mentioned earlier, in Iran, not only is there no security for these individuals and their valuable work to achieve the non-violent realization of one or all of the rights listed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; it is unimaginable, but the government itself is seen as the first enemy and threat to these individuals. In honor of Human Rights Day, the monthly publication “Khat-e-Solh” pays tribute to the valuable work of human rights defenders in Iran, and mentions the names of some of the human rights activists who are currently imprisoned in Iran, honoring their memory.
