Critical analysis of policies and methods of rehabilitation related to drugs / Abdullah Bai Lashki

This text critically examines the compliance of the Islamic Republic of Iran with international human rights laws and principles of the United Nations within the framework of policies related to drugs and rehabilitation methods. The focus is on analyzing the consequences of the actions of the Iranian government, especially the execution of individuals convicted of drug trafficking and the misconduct of staff in rehabilitation camps, through the lens of international human rights laws. This text, drawn from a diverse range of reputable sources, including international human rights treaties and conventions, reports from human rights organizations, and relevant judicial procedures, analyzes Iran’s adherence to international human rights standards.

The execution of individuals convicted of drug trafficking by the government of Iran raises significant concerns about human rights, especially regarding international human rights laws and principles of the United Nations. The right to life – as stated in international human rights documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights – is a fundamental principle that emphasizes the inherent and non-negotiable nature of this right. The use of the death penalty for individuals involved in drug-related crimes raises many ethical questions and requires a thorough examination of compliance with international human rights standards.

From the perspective of international human rights laws, the execution of individuals accused of drug trafficking raises concerns about the fair process of arrest, police investigations, trials, and sentencing. Human rights standards dictate that all accused individuals should have the right to a fair and impartial trial. However, in most cases, sentences for drug trafficking are handed down in a highly opaque manner. The United Nations continuously emphasizes the importance of strictly adhering to legal procedures in cases where the death penalty is used to prevent violations of the right to life and ensure the respect for international human rights principles.

In addition, the laws for drug traffickers must be examined in accordance with international human rights standards to ensure that they are in line with principles of fair trial, proportionality of punishment, and the right to life. The Islamic Republic, without considering international laws and solely relying on domestic judicial laws, executes a large number of suspects for drug trafficking every year. The existing laws in the Islamic Republic are in conflict with human rights laws. This is while many international organizations and human rights activists emphasize that the issuance and execution of death sentences in drug-related cases must comply with international human rights laws and any deviation from these standards must be thoroughly investigated and held accountable for.

It is necessary to examine issues related to the execution of individuals involved in drug-related crimes by the Islamic Republic government. This should be done by utilizing a diverse range of reputable sources, including international human rights treaties and conventions, reports from human rights organizations, academic articles on human rights, and so on. By relying on analyses from strong and credible sources, the examination of these issues through international human rights laws and United Nations principles can serve as a barrier to the increasing number of individuals being executed in relation to drugs.

On the other hand, reports of inappropriate and sometimes inhumane behavior by employees in rehabilitation camps towards individuals seeking assistance for drug addiction raises serious concerns about human rights, particularly in regards to international human rights laws and principles of the United Nations. The right to health, dignity, and protection from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment are fundamental principles of human rights, as stated in international human rights documents such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the United Nations Convention on Human Rights.

From a human rights perspective, individuals who struggle with substance abuse have the right to access adequate healthcare, including rehabilitation services, without fear of mistreatment. Employees of rehabilitation centers are obligated to support these rights and create an environment that respects the inherent dignity of those seeking help. Inappropriate behavior by employees in rehabilitation centers, including mistreatment, neglect, or exploitation, is a violation of these fundamental human rights principles. Unfortunately, in recent years, there have been numerous reports of mistreatment towards individuals seeking help at addiction treatment camps.

International human rights law emphasizes the commitment of governments and relevant authorities to ensure the support and well-being of individuals seeking rehabilitation services. Since addiction is considered a disease, patients seeking treatment at addiction treatment centers can be seen as beneficiaries seeking rehabilitation. Inappropriate behavior of employees at these centers violates the rights of individuals seeking assistance and goes against the principles of dignity, non-discrimination, and the right to health enshrined in international human rights laws.

Unfortunately, we have not yet witnessed a serious response from the Islamic Republic government towards offenders. Existing legal loopholes and the negligence of officials have resulted in many cases where victims of this misconduct are not supported. In investigating issues related to inappropriate behavior in rehabilitation centers, it is necessary to refer to a variety of credible sources, including international human rights treaties and conventions, reports from human rights organizations regarding human rights and rehabilitation, and related cases. With reference to analyses from strong and reputable sources, examining these issues through international human rights laws and United Nations principles can be the key to resolving this issue.

At the end, it is necessary to mention that the examination of the actions and behaviors of the Islamic Republic government in the light of international human rights laws and United Nations principles raises significant concerns regarding the observance of human rights standards. The practice of executing individuals convicted of drug trafficking and the inappropriate behavior of employees in rehabilitation camps bring up many ethical questions and require an investigation into the adherence of the Islamic Republic government to international human rights laws.
