Artificial intelligence, employment or unemployment? / Navid Jamshidi
It has been a while since articles about “Artificial Intelligence” have become a constant presence in the media and with the recent developments in this phenomenon, many unanswered questions have occupied the minds of people all over the world, directed towards this new technological phenomenon, and of course, have created (positive and negative) emotions in the public’s minds.
The explanation of the scientific aspects of this extraordinary human progress is the work of scientists in this field and, of course, for the technical details of this subject, one should refer to reliable scientific sources. The purpose of the following text is not a technical analysis, but a brief analysis of the impact of this new human progress on one of the most important pillars of the economy, namely employment, in order to be useful.
Artificial Intelligence, based on the invention of computers about sixty years ago, can be considered a relatively old phenomenon that has become a highly advanced technology in the 21st century due to astonishing advancements in the digital revolution. As a result, examining the impact of this technology on human jobs can also be considered from a historical perspective, so that based on experience, we can make more accurate predictions for the future of employment.
With the industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe and the subsequent digital revolution in the 20th century in the world, many jobs that were once considered manual, such as calligraphy, bathhouse attendants, performers in shows or factories, ice breaking, and hundreds of other examples that now seem strange, have almost completely disappeared. But the question is: Has the overall diversity of jobs decreased and has the unemployment rate increased economically?
According to evidence and statistics, the answer to this question is a definite “no”. And of course, the progress of humanity during the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries has led to an increase in the diversity and quantity of occupations, as well as the growth of the global economy, which probably does not require any further explanation.
Let’s return to the topic of the article, which is examining the future of jobs in the age of artificial intelligence.
Given the brief introduction mentioned above, it can be said with certainty that the widespread influence of artificial intelligence in the pillars of human life will also lead to occasional significant changes in the nature of jobs. However, a similar question arises: Will the quantity and quality of jobs (in general) decrease and the unemployment rate of humans increase?
The writer believes that the answer to the above question will be “no”. I would like to emphasize that undoubtedly some jobs will change or even disappear, but most likely new jobs that are more in line with the nature of human comfort will replace or be created, and the initial result of this will be economic growth – especially in developed countries with free economies.
Given the increasing presence of advanced artificial intelligence technology in today’s world and in order to clarify the claims made in this article, we provide a concrete example:
The artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, which at the time of writing this note is less than five months since its first public release, has gained over 100 million users worldwide, which is an extraordinary opportunity for creativity in creating economic opportunities. A fascinating example of the effectiveness of this artificial intelligence recently reached our economic editorial team at “Asia News”. In this project, the cloud-based artificial intelligence of Microsoft was immediately discussed in relation to cryptocurrency matters, and within a few weeks, the price and volume of transactions for some digital currencies increased due to people’s use of this artificial intelligence. Undoubtedly, this growth will provide a good platform for creative entrepreneurs.
We will also provide an example of professions that are at risk of destruction:
Accounting work, is an example of a job that will most likely be completely taken over by artificial intelligence, but does this mean unemployment for accounting professionals? No! Perhaps the job of accounting will be eliminated for humans to perform, but the science of accounting will naturally remain and accounting professionals should continue to learn about artificial intelligence (similar to human intelligence) in a different but simpler way, and in this professional leap, it is likely that easy, accurate and profitable economic competitions and side jobs will also be created.
In a general view, it is important to note that artificial intelligence technology is the beginning of a great transformation in human life and it is natural that understanding its advantages and disadvantages requires more time. Of course, in the diverse world of humans, some matters will benefit some and at the same time harm others. McKinsey & Company has claimed that by 2030 (which is near), artificial intelligence can replace 30% of the current human workforce. This claim can be good news for advanced societies facing a shortage of human resources, and on the other hand, it can be a worrying news for societies like Iran, which unfortunately have a growing unemployment problem.
In conclusion, paying attention to the human dimensions of artificial intelligence is also crucial, as the impacts seem positive at the beginning. A tangible example of this is that the reader of this article can easily find out the details through a simple internet search, the arrival of artificial intelligence is a great help for the visually impaired, which is inherently a positive and hopeful phenomenon.
With the hope that Iranians will not fall behind in this great human progress and the use of this technology will lead to the advancement of our beloved country, Iran.
