“Buying mandatory military service and the problems young people face in purchasing or completing it / Hana Amiri”

Military service in Iran has a history of over a century and is mandatory. Men, after reaching the age of eighteen, with the exception of a few who have exemption conditions, are all required to serve in the military. If they do not go to service, they will be deprived of all government services and citizenship rights, and will face many problems and difficulties in their lives in Iran, which can be said to greatly hinder and deprive a person’s life. So far, military service has been sold several times in Iran, and exemption cards from service have been issued for those who can afford to buy their way out. Those who could not afford it were forced to be deployed and serve. This buying and selling of military service has taken place in a situation where the government is short of money and has resorted to an unfair and unplanned method of reaching into the pockets of the people to fill its empty treasury. This legislation, without a solid foundation and without expert and managed evaluations, will undoubtedly

Now we must address the problems that the way of conscription in Iran has created for young people.

In this failed plan, the parliament had proposed that “holders of associate degrees or lower pay two hundred and fifty million tomans, holders of bachelor’s and master’s degrees pay four hundred million tomans, and holders of general medical and specialized doctorate degrees and higher pay six hundred million tomans in all fields” to buy their military service.

At first, what is clearly disturbing is the increase in the designated amount for mandatory military service. The government should consider all aspects and conditions of fairness in determining the amounts for the sale of end-of-service cards and implement justice equally for all segments of society, which unfortunately, the lawmakers for military service have considered heavy and excessive amounts without considering the conditions of different segments and the problems of young people. This proposal in one sentence brings to mind the reality that the law is made for a specific group, as the purchase of military service has been accompanied by a twenty-four-fold increase in price compared to the last selling period in 2018, which is a shocking increase and a commercial use of mandatory military service, and considering the increasing inability of different segments of society, it can be considered a discriminatory law.

In these circumstances, how can a young person with empty pockets and no job or income manage to provide the heavy amounts needed to buy military service? A young person who, even if they can somehow manage to gather the money for their service through loans and borrowing, and buy their service through a job that has been promised to them or a job they had before service, without insurance, can they even make up for some of this amount with the basic salary that the labor office has set for them in these two years? Unfortunately, this legislation, without considering the living conditions of the people and without fairness, has caused such small and large problems for the youth of the nation and even their families and loved ones. Imagine a young person who cannot afford to buy their service, and sees a privileged person who can easily buy their service without any worries or stress with their father’s forced money. Is this humiliation and discrimination not the cause of frustration and disappointment in the implementation of justice, which brings many social problems

Given the very high statistics of single young men who are of marriageable age, but due to numerous problems and obstacles and limitations that stand in their way of starting a family, have not yet been successful in achieving this important goal, this plan is completely ineffective and impractical for many young people in the country. For a young person who has spent many years of their life studying and is now stuck in these circumstances and cannot even leave the country, is going to military service just wasting two more years of their life and golden opportunities for their progress? What is the real cost of being exempted? This decision can certainly not be a factor in encouraging young people to get married and have children; because it is fundamentally wrong. Which young person in an unstable situation of unemployment, inflation and increasing poverty, especially with the alarming rise in housing prices, which is one of the most vital and fundamental needs for starting a family, has the audacity and courage to even think about getting married in these conditions?
