The Coronavirus Crisis and the Education System / Rada Mardani
The question here is whether in textbooks and educational materials, should there be content about COVID-19 due to the current needs of society and students? The answer to this question is yes, as one of the most important features of educational content is being purposeful and up-to-date. Being purposeful and up-to-date means nothing but simulating the theoretical books with the practical and tangible lives of students, in the sense that educational content should be practical and useful. Considering these factors, including and implementing relevant issues related to COVID-19 such as clear and simple explanation of the disease, educational dimensions of prevention from COVID-19, and necessary actions to prevent its transmission and spread to others, must be included in textbooks.
On the other hand, incorporating this disease into the content of textbooks includes all the characteristics of modern educational content, such as addressing the needs of learners, being based on scientific phenomena, and serving as a behavioral stimulus for students.
Another fundamental question is how the role of civil society in general and teacher unions in particular should be in advocating for vaccination?
If we pay attention and contemplate the concerns of civil society and trade unions in daily affairs, the real needs, cultural, social and political concerns of a trade group, we can surely consider the demand for universal vaccination at the same level as other countries to save human lives, as well as in-person and direct education for students and students as part of the demands and demands of trade unions.
Different trade unions, including the Iranian Documentary Filmmakers Association, recently issued a statement calling for universal vaccination against COVID-19 for the general public in Iran; a vaccine that is approved by the World Health Organization.
Therefore, teachers’ trade unions should also demand a vaccine that meets the approved standards of the World Health Organization.
About the impact of official advertisements and boasting about the achievements of managing the coronavirus with what is visible in society, and the role it plays in undermining trust in current education and upbringing, it must be acknowledged that what propaganda and government advertisements claim about producing various coronavirus vaccines and mass vaccination is completely contradictory to what the general public sees within society. The numerous false promises that we constantly see in government advertising for the production of the coronavirus vaccine and even its distribution abroad have caused not only people to not believe these claims, but have also become a subject of ridicule and jokes for the people.
Distrust in authority is such that, despite nearly two months passing since the start of vaccination for teachers, many teachers have refrained from getting vaccinated; because there is no trust in vaccines such as Barakat and Sinopharm.
