The War of Women Against the Oppressive Government Machine / Banafsheh Jamali

A 14-year-old girl, while hiding behind an electrical kiosk, is trembling and staring in awe at the approaching Basij forces. The Basij forces stand up and the officers start marching, rushing towards the girl. The young girl fights back against the officers’ punches and kicks, but the large number of officers has her terrified. Some of them surround her and attack her, hitting her head against the kiosk. They forcefully drag her to the ground and throw her into a van. This account is a familiar image for all women who have been oppressed by the Islamic Republic. This incident has proven that age can no longer protect women from the brutal attacks of the government. The reality is that women of all ages in Iran are currently fighting against the Islamic Republic on the streets.

The wounds of the killings of Mahsa Amini, Nikta Shakeri, Sarina Esmaeilzadeh, and dozens of other young Iranians who were brutally murdered are still fresh. The truth is

Organizing wooden stands for women’s rights activists: The execution sentence of “Sharifeh Mohammadi” and “Pakshan Azizi”.Sharifeh Mohammadi was arrested on December 5, 1923 in Rasht with a warrant. This labor activist was transferred to the Sanandaj Intelligence Office after twenty days and was repeatedly beaten during interrogation. Sharifeh Mohammadi was deprived of the right to contact her family for a long time and was under pressure from her interrogators to give forced confessions. This labor activist was transferred to Lakan Prison in Rasht in February of that year. On July 5, 1924, Sharifeh was sentenced to death in the first branch of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht on charges of “rebellion”; a verdict that shocked the Iranian civil and political society. The death sentence for a labor activist, whose only charge was membership in the labor organization “Coordination Committee for Assistance in the Creation of Labor Organizations”, is not only unprecedented within the repressive laws that the Islamic Republic has issued in the past forty years, but also shows the government’s determination to

The conviction of women activists in Gilan to long-term imprisonment. On August 16, 2023, eleven women’s rights activists in Gilan were simultaneously and violently arrested in their homes. Most of these activists were subjected to physical abuse during their arrest and experienced long-term solitary confinement. Sara Javani, Matin Yazdani, Zahra and Zahra Dadres, Forough Sami’nia, Jalveh Javaheri, Hooman Taheri, Nagin Rezai, Shiva Shahsiah, Azadeh Chavoshian, and Yasamin Hashdari were all activists who were arrested at the same time in one city. The Revolutionary Court of Rasht sentenced these activists to more than 60 years and 6 months in prison. According to these sentences, Zahra Dadres was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months, Sara Javani, Matin Yazdani, Zahra Dadres, Forough Sami’nia, Nagin Rezai, Shiva Shahsiah

From Evin to Lacan Prison: Women’s Resistance Against Execution. The prisoners’ food strike, which began on February 14, 2023 and is now known as “Wednesdays Against Execution”, initially started in Qezelhesar prison in Karaj. Women and men prisoners in various cities, from Evin and Central Karaj prisons to Khoy, Naghadeh, Saqqez, Mashhad, Khorramabad, Tabriz and Lakan Rasht prisons, joined this protest. This campaign was launched in protest against the widespread executions by the Islamic Republic and has not only included prisoners, but also many civil and political activists outside of prison.

Amnesty International reported 853 executions in Iran in 2023 and considered it unprecedented in the past eight years. In its 2023 report on Iran, the organization wrote: “The Islamic Republic continues to use the death penalty as a tool to suppress political opponents, protesters, and ethnic minorities.” Additionally, the international human rights organization stated: “At least fifteen prisoners associated with the

Struggle and resistance, the daily task of women from the streets to the prison.

Insult and humiliation, sexual assault and harassment, beating and arrest, heavy prison sentences, travel bans, job bans and expulsion from the workplace are some of the pressures and oppressions that women in Iran are facing extensively these days. It seems that the Islamic Republic intends to suppress any form of protest on the eve of the second anniversary of the Mahsa movement by using widespread oppressive tools, such as issuing death sentences and imprisoning women’s rights activists, in order to silence any potential protests. The extensive oppression on one hand shows that the Islamic Republic is using all its efforts to suppress protests and maintain its power, and on the other hand, it shows the determination and endless will of women who will not stop until they achieve equality and freedom, which they consider their right. The fight and resistance that has now become an inseparable part of the lives of free-thinking women, who are being held hostage by the Islamic Republic.
