“Addiction and uncontrollable habits do not recognize gender. Humans are sometimes so influenced or pressured by the most real and purest inner feelings such as highs and lows, love, sadness, loss, anger, joy, peace, patience, etc. that they feel overwhelmed and lost. Then, in pursuit of intensifying those feelings or alleviating the despair and frustration, they may lack the ability and skills to create or get rid of them, depending on their own desires or imposed circumstances, and this is the critical moment… And women, when faced with these circumstances, fall faster and deeper into the quagmire.”

Many issues in Iran must be accepted under the heavy shadow of a gender-biased mindset. Despite the efforts and official and unofficial activities of human rights activists, the women’s society in Iran is still struggling with countless complexities and problems in social issues; small and large problems that seem to continue forever. Addiction is also one of these complex and unsolvable issues. This extreme and recurring problem has been studied and attempted to be controlled in various ways in many societies for years. Like many other phenomena, addiction has become more complicated day by day due to economic, political, and social backgrounds, and after going through periods of harsh and sometimes inhumane punishments and solutions, many societies have now reached the point of trying to treat, prevent, control, and address the issues of this vulnerable group.

“Thinking and contemplating about the coordinates of these individuals brings endless sorrow. These coordinates, which are becoming more and more dependent on deeper and more complex factors every day, are not easy to explain or justify, but every day these struggling individuals who have a habit of uncontrollable repetition in consumption, are faced with even more tragic destinies. The way of dealing with the destruction and disintegration caused by addiction, like many other issues in different societies, is different and definitely leads to different results. In Iran, for years, irresponsibility and incorrect focus on one hand, and entanglement of social problems with political issues on the other hand, have made dealing with and finding solutions difficult and often fruitless. Now, if we specifically look at addiction in women in Iran, the situation is even more heartbreaking. Iranian women are exposed to numerous physical and psychological damages, some of which are not even legally punishable. In Iran, the phenomenon of addiction in women leads to extremely tragic and deep consequences,

As the years go by, addiction has deviated from its traditional and old path and has now spread to schools, indicating a greater disaster. Women’s addiction is usually hidden as much as possible due to prevailing circumstances and is revealed much later, making it much more difficult to have effective opportunities for treatment or prevention. If realistic and fact-based thinking and finding or implementing scientific and specialized solutions are not given priority, and if simple-mindedness and neglect continue, both in terms of prevention and treatment and in terms of social and psychological interventions, the dimensions of this destruction and collapse will expand day by day and create even greater social complexities.

“If only there was a campaign of humanistic and compassionate thinking, with a realistic and non-judgmental approach, to address the cries of sorrow and despair of women who suffer from all kinds of failures, hopelessness, neglect, disappointment, frustration, poverty and destitution in the ignorance of the extreme and uncontrolled world of materialism. Is there anyone listening, anyone seeing, anyone thinking of a solution?”
