The conversation was about Saba and Afshari.

On August 2, 2018, a gathering was held in Tehran to protest against the poor economic conditions and corruption, resulting in the arrest of over 50 people. Mojdeh Rajabi was one of the detainees who was sentenced to six months in prison by Branch 28 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Judge Mohammad Moghiseh. Ms. Rajabi, who holds a degree in biotechnology, has experience of being held in the Ministry of Intelligence detention center, Qarchak prison, and the women’s ward of Evin prison. She was recently released from prison. In this issue of “Peace Line,” we have interviewed this political prisoner and asked her about the prison conditions, difficulties, and injustices she faced.

Tell us about your experience of being arrested and what you learned during the time you were in prison. Did this arrest change your perspective on the human rights situation in Iran?

I was arrested during the protests against high prices on August 2nd, 2018. Every day at 7 PM, I used to sell my handmade crafts at the city theater. That day, the intelligence officers grabbed me from behind and beat me. Due to my resistance, they hit my face and legs with a shocker, causing my left tooth to break. We spent one night in the Ministry of Intelligence detention center and then were transferred to Evin Court the next day. The day after, we were exiled to the Qarchak women’s prison. We spent 75 days in that prison, during which I suffered severe emotional damage. It was the first time I was among people I had never encountered in my normal life. In fact, there was no separation of crimes in that prison. In all wards, drug addicts, drug dealers, murder suspects, and people with dangerous diseases were all together, and we were also among them. The prison is an indescri

What was the health situation like in prison? Do you think officials paid enough attention to women’s health?

In prison, hygiene supplies were given to prisoners, but there was no specific time and the quality of the supplies was very low. Also, due to the saltiness of the water, the cleaning supplies were not effective and hygiene issues were not being observed.

How was the behavior of the prison staff towards female prisoners? During the time you were imprisoned, did you witness any disrespectful or insulting behavior towards prisoners?

The behavior of the prison staff in Garchak was very bad and they always treated the prisoners with disrespect and insults. For example, several times when I was feeling unwell, they did not take me to the infirmary and insisted that I was lying. Most of the time, when someone was feeling unwell, they would not open the door or pay any attention. When I complained about the bad behavior of the individuals, I was insulted and told that if I was a decent person, why was I here. The situation was the same in Evin prison as well.

How did prisoners cover their expenses? Were you witness to discrimination or, in other words, a class system among prisoners? For example, if a woman’s family did not deposit money for her, what were the conditions?

Women who didn’t have any deposits were forced to work in the prison in order to earn money. For example, they would clean the toilets or take care of the prison’s cleanliness. They would also wash the dishes of other prisoners or their clothes. In return, they would receive a phone card or time to make phone calls, or they would receive a small amount of money for the work they had done, so they could buy their necessities from the prison store.

What was the biggest problem that bothered you the most in Qarchak prison?

In Qarchak, the quality of food was very low and it even caused me to have chest pains during my short stay there. The behavior of the staff was also truly disturbing. But most importantly, the prison drama and psychological damage caused by other inmates was the main issue. This problem is due to the lack of adherence to the principle of separating crimes in this prison.

Do you think there are any major problems or issues in prisons that are often overlooked?

In my opinion, risky sexual behaviors in women’s prisons, hidden diseases, and lack of differentiation in crimes are issues that are not given enough attention.

If you have any specific point in mind, please let me know.

A special note is that I request all members of society to forget about judging. Not all educated individuals are necessarily knowledgeable and not all individuals with less education are illiterate. If you first look within yourself before judging, you will forget about judging others.

The important point is that photos of me were distributed on websites and it was said that the location was a city park, which I should correct and say that the location of those photos was the city theater. Some people also wrote under those published photos of me that if she is a street vendor, then why did she have a nose job and other things like that. My goal in doing this was to show all the women of my land that they should not be interested in any obstacles to live and work alongside men in any situation; because in order to achieve their goals, they must remove obstacles and be independent.

Thank you for the opportunity you have given us to use the peace line.
