Book Introduction: Marginality (Theories, Methods, Case Studies)

The book “Marginalization (Theories, Methods, Case Studies)” is a collection of articles written by Iranian sociologist Asadollah Naghdi, with 288 pages, which discusses marginalization and its effects. These 15 articles were previously published in social science journals or presented at various specialized conferences before being compiled into a book. One of the notable features of this collection is that the articles have been carefully selected to cover a wide range of cities, in order to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation and issues of marginalization in Iran.

In the preface of this book, it is stated: “The author’s personal experience of communication, understanding, and touching the lives and issues of marginalized, newcomers, suburbs, and immigrants in Iranian cities, as well as Iranian immigrants abroad – which in itself is a different form and experience of migration and marginalization – on one hand, and living in big and small cities and in different geographical regions of Iran, such as Miandoab, Mashhad, Tehran, Isfahan, Hamadan, and others, on the other hand, has led to a focus on observation, tracking, research, and writing about margins and marginalized people for more than two decades, becoming one of the professional preoccupations of the writer. In this regard, the publication of the book “Marginalization and Informal Settlement (Iran’s Fourth World)” with the foreword of Dr. Habibollah Zanjani in 2007 and participation in dozens of national and international conferences on urban issues,

In this book, marginalization is defined as any point in a city or social group that lacks the standards of living, services, and urban infrastructure. Currently, marginalization in large cities of Iran and the world is a social crisis, in medium-sized cities and provincial centers it is a social issue, and in small cities it is a phenomenon.
