A Look at the Election Promises of Physicians Regarding “Filtering” and “Monitoring” / Hormoz Sharifian
The world has different policies, one of which is the world of “promises”. Nowadays, politicians in all forms of government – from democratic to semi-democratic and even authoritarian – are forced to make promises to the people and the people usually have no choice but to “vote” based on the promises they hear from the candidates. After the election, if they fulfill their promises, they gain “credibility” which becomes a “social capital” for their future and the movement or party that emerges from them. But if they do not fulfill their promises, they will only face “discrediting” and losing their “voting base”. This is when they no longer have any capital and it leads to the loss of their popular support. And if a ruler or government does not have this capital and support, they are undoubtedly doomed to failure.
Masoud Pezeshkian, the newly elected president of the Islamic Republic, entered the election campaign with the full support of the “Reformist Movement” and its leader, “Seyed Mohammad Khatami”. Pezeshkian, who served as the Minister of Health in the second reformist government, enjoys a relative credibility among the reformists and even some of the fundamentalists. In fact, it was not only the support of the reformists that made Pezeshkian the “tenant of Pasteur”, but also a significant portion of the moderate fundamentalists who supported him; a movement that has shown a visible closeness to the moderate reformist spectrum in recent years.
On the other hand, a large portion of the protesting people of Iran supported the rise of the “Jalilists” and the extremist faction of “Stability” from the medical community, while having no joy from the reformists and their main slogan still being “Reformists, fundamentalists, the story is over.” In fact, a portion of these protesters separated from the largest segment of Iranian society, the “election boycotters,” and based on the same pattern of “choosing between bad and worse,” out of fear of choosing “Saeed Jalili” and his extremist supporters, went against their inner desires and voted for the medical community. Despite all the insistence of the medical community on not making promises to their supporters, the two arms of his election campaign – “Mohammad Javad Zarif and Ali Larijani” – made promises to the people, which convinced many to participate in the elections and choose the medical community.
Despite all these qualities, the number of eligible candidates based on statistics from institutions within the Islamic Republic system – which many people do not believe in – still did not reach 50%, and the government accepted the bitter reality that the majority of the nation is not happy with it and they came to power through force.
Aside from the bankrupt and extremely weak economic situation of the country, which has directly affected the livelihood of the people and greatly expanded the range of poverty, there are also other fundamental and very important demands on the long list of the rightful demands of the Iranian nation. One of these demands is “lifting filtering” and the other is “collecting the surveillance patrols”.
As a journalist living in Iran, documenting the extremely dire economic situation of the people is a very difficult and painful task. Describing the living conditions of fellow citizens who are forced to dig through trash to find a piece of bread or loved ones who are forced to sleep on cardboard boxes, graves, buses, etc. is so heartbreaking that it is better for photographs to depict this agonizing poverty; words are unable to convey the severity of this distressing situation.
It is natural for those who have voted for doctors and even those who have sanctioned the elections, to not expect him to eradicate such terrifying and deep-rooted poverty overnight, because the cursed seed of this corrupt tree has been planted in a time far before the doctors came to power. But it is not unreasonable to start fighting against the plague of poverty quickly, and who doesn’t know that in order to fundamentally change the country’s economy and make it flourish, fundamental changes must be made in foreign policy.
But what can strengthen the foundations of his leadership and popularity a hundredfold, so that in his second term as president, a large portion of the sanctions supporters also join him, is fulfilling promises and meeting the demands of the people who have become attached to him and his cabinet for fundamental changes and improving their difficult living conditions.
For example, after the widespread movement of “Women’s Freedom” that took shape after the killing of “Mahsa Amini” by the agents of the Basij Organization, it spread throughout the country and faced society with an increasing crisis. A wave of resistance from the people, especially women, against mandatory hijab and extreme violence took shape. A violence that even some radical factions of the fundamentalist movement did not approve of and did not know how to solve this cultural problem without resorting to extreme and barbaric violence. This issue became one of the demands of civil society, the dismantling of the Basij Organization, which has shocked the world with its scenes of agents confronting Iranian women and girls, and at times it is so painful that no authority is willing to take responsibility for the violent actions of these self-appointed units and approve their violent and inhumane behavior.
One of the objections of physicians in speeches and election debates is precisely the violence that the Basij forces impose on women and girls, as the severity of these actions has reached a point where even a large portion of veiled Iranian women who believe in the hijab have strongly protested against these actions.
One of the demands of the Iranian people is “lifting censorship”; a blockade that has had a destructive impact on the economy of many families to the point where many online businesses, especially those on Instagram, have been forced to shut down, leading to unemployment for many young people and families who were engaged in legitimate and reasonable businesses through this platform.
As mentioned earlier, both opponents and supporters of physicians do not expect miracles from him and believe that repairing the damages inherited from his predecessors is not a one or two-day job. The Iranian people also understand and are aware of the numerous obstacles in his way.
But the strange and amazing achievements of doctors in the cabinet, in the very first step, caused a lot of frustration and disappointment among their supporters, let alone their opponents! It is true that judgment may be premature at the moment and we must be patient, but doctors should not expect the patience of Job from the people of Iran; a people who, especially in the past two decades, have been struggling with the most difficult financial, occupational, and livelihood problems and their patience has overflowed; a people who are aware of their assets, wealth, capital, and capabilities and believe that with efficient management, they should live much better than this. Thanks to advances in the age of communication, the people of Iran see that today, countries and nations that may not even have half of the wealth and capabilities of Iran and Iranians, enjoy remarkable prosperity and understand the difference between “living” and “just being alive”. A people who believe that with these assets and capital, they should not be dependent on their
Masoud Pazhokian does not have much time, as his first four-year term as the head of the executive branch is coming to an end. If he can fulfill the demands of the nation in this short time and through his actions, paint a clear picture for them, without a doubt the people will stand by him and cooperate with him. However, if he, like many officials, does not stand on the right side and does not take the suffering of the people into account, and turns a blind eye to their demands and acts against the advice of the “Master of the Pious”, and only knows how to read the Nahj al-Balagha, he should not expect to be held accountable by the people and expect them to continue supporting him. This is a nation whose patience has reached its limit, and if it is not taken into consideration, it will overflow and the consequences of this overflow, which will turn into a raging flood in a short time, will be directed
