Sexual assault is defined as engaging in sexual acts and having sexual relations with someone who is not willing. However, in the case of children under the age of 18, any sexual relations with adults or someone who is two years older is considered sexual assault.
Individuals who experience sexual assault often consider it the most terrifying and damaging event of their lives, and if they do not receive psychological treatment and support, they will suffer from its effects for the rest of their lives.
Mental problems after rape can generally be categorized into five cases:
Mental pressure disorder after the accident
PTSD stands for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
This psychological disorder, which is a chronic and debilitating disorder, is caused by the experience of a highly damaging and dangerous event by an individual. People with PTSD typically experience a group of symptoms, including: recurrent and distressing memories of the traumatic event through mental images, thoughts related to the event, and associated perceptions; repeated mental experiences of the incident due to sensory errors, delusions, and recurring flashbacks; severe psychological distress when faced with signs and events that symbolize or remind them of the traumatic event; intense physiological responses when confronted with triggering signs, such as rapid heartbeat, sweating, rapid and shallow breathing, etc.; attempts to avoid thoughts and emotions related to the psychological impact; efforts to avoid confrontation with people, places, and activities related to the traumatic event or trauma; difficulty remembering important parts of the incident; significant decrease in interests and participation in important activities; feeling disconnected from others; feeling a loss of future, meaning the individual does not have the usual expectations and visions of the future
The feeling of guilt.
Victims of assault often feel guilty and blame themselves, thinking that if they weren’t in a certain place, at a certain time, or under certain circumstances, the incident would not have happened to them.
Anger
Victims of assault are usually very angry towards the perpetrator.
Revenge
Many victims feel a strong desire for revenge towards their abuser, and this issue leads to a mental conflict and recurring thoughts for them.
Suicidal thoughts
Many victims suffer from repeated suicidal thoughts after being assaulted.
In addition to these cases, depending on the circumstances, there are other emotions and states such as fear, guilt, etc.
But after this incident, what should be done?
First of all, since sexual assault usually involves levels of violence, it is necessary to consult a doctor – especially specialists in sexual organs – to examine any injuries.
Visiting an infectious disease specialist and performing tests related to sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis, etc.
Visiting the police to file a report (depending on the circumstances).
Visit to a psychiatrist
Visiting a psychologist and receiving psychological treatment.
Communicating and informing about an event with close and trusted ones.
Creating security means being in a situation where the victim feels safe and the likelihood of another violation is minimized.
If the victim feels uncomfortable talking about the incident, they should clearly and firmly tell others that they do not want to talk about it.
There must be an effort to find supportive resources.
Until the mental problems caused by marriage and establishing deep emotional relationships are resolved, one should refrain.
At the end, it is necessary to emphasize again that the use of psychological treatments is essential; because the negative effects of abuse on a person’s future life will usually be minimized.
