Khosrow Noori
For years, the dervishes of Gonabad in Iran have been deprived of their social and educational rights and the government’s security approach has weighed heavily on them. In the past year, despite promises and slogans to create a suitable environment for personal and social freedoms by politicians, we have witnessed the expansion of social deprivation among the dervishes of Gonabad. In recent months, Dr. Shahram Pazouki and Dr. Ali Mohammad Saberi, prominent professors of philosophy and mysticism, have been prevented from teaching at universities by security forces, and Mr. Farshid Yedollahi and Mr. Mostafa Daneshju, lawyers for the dervishes of Gonabad, have been deprived of their right to education and expelled from university. At the same time, six dervishes living in Kavar are in exile and one of the dervishes in Bandar Abbas has been imprisoned for almost a year. Of course, the systematic pressure and boycotts do not end

One of the fundamental topics of human rights is the right to social and cultural rights of every individual, which includes the right to education. The freedom to learn is considered a fundamental right, to the extent that liberation from ignorance through education and upbringing is not only recommended, but also considered a necessary and obligatory matter in all moral and customary resources of human societies. In the international system, the right to education is also recognized as a means for promoting understanding, tolerance, and respect for other beliefs, in order to facilitate the path to achieving universal peace. This right is affirmed and emphasized in the universal principles of the Iranian constitution, and all unreasonable restrictions and limitations on the people’s enjoyment of their rights and freedoms have been removed, closing the door to any justification for discrimination. Therefore, there is no legal restriction on education based on age, gender, morality, profession, or religious beliefs, and it is obvious that the right to education is not limited to academic education alone; rather, it also includes the

Based on this, a number of students from Darvish, along with their fellow student friends, protested against the educational deprivation of Darvish Gonabadis by issuing a statement defending the right to education. In this statement, they condemned the deprivation of Darvish Gonabadis from this right, citing legal foundations and emphasizing the necessity of respecting the right to education. They also demanded the elimination of any discrimination against all sectors of society. During the 3-day process of issuing this statement, despite the boycott of this student protest by domestic media, with the efforts of students and dissemination of information and breaking the boycott, 3000 students from all over the country signed the statement. The Student Union Council, the Teachers’ Union, the Labor Union, and other sectors of society also showed their support by publishing the statement.
One of the notable points of this movement was the presentation of a new method of resistance and advancement of civil and student protests in today’s turbulent and politicized society, where most social movements arise from the staging of the powerful and wealthy and the active presence of citizens is only seen as a black army to advance their own political interests. They aim to make their voice of oppression and protest heard by everyone.

Civil Death
The security gaze towards the Gonabadi Dervishes and the systematic imposition of social deprivation upon them can be found in a legal-political institution that has a long history as a tool for suppressing the silent citizens; the concept of “civil death” which was initially considered a form of punishment and retribution for criminals, such as imprisonment, exile, prevention of rights to work, marriage, etc., was used as a tool for gradual and civil death of freedom-seeking and peace-loving individuals and groups by self-serving and despotic governments; in this process, individuals, groups or communities were gradually stripped of their social rights, such as the right to education, employment, authorship, and any basic and human rights, until they were left with no trace and were subjected to civil death. This oppressive system also includes boycotting, as seen in the case of Dr. Nour Ali Tabandeh, the spiritual leader of the Gonabadi Dervishes, who has been prevented from traveling
In summary, the reasons for these confrontations and security pressures must be investigated within the ruling system of the Islamic Republic. The structure of a religious government, which uses religious tools to justify its illegal actions and measures the legal and constitutional demands of citizens with a discriminatory view towards any ethnicity or belief, is self-serving and self-preserving. As a result, the suppression and denial of the rights of the majority is a natural consequence of satisfying the needs of a minority dependent on the core of power. Therefore, we witness not only the Gonabadi dervishes, but also other sectors and classes of society feeling the shadow of security measures in various ways and tasting the bitter taste of urban death through deprivation and social discrimination by the ruling government.
Undoubtedly, the recognition and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms, as stated in the constitution and necessary international documents, and the emphasis and attention to wisdom and rationality in the light of the rule of law and respect for beliefs and rights of all classes and nationalities, and as a result, the spread of love and friendship among the people, will pave the way for achieving universal and lasting peace and tranquility. It is hoped that every individual, regardless of their society, beliefs, religion, color, or race, will benefit from peace, freedom, and tranquility.
