The university is alive / Shahriar Shams
We begin this note with a quote from Sophie Scholl, a student who stood in front of Hitler and was executed: “I cannot understand how some people constantly put the lives of others in danger. I will never understand and I think it is terrible. Don’t tell me it’s for the sake of the fatherland.”
Throughout history, students have always been searching for reasons and a better understanding of issues. One of the main characteristics that leads to tyranny and illogical disobedience to tyrants is this constant search for reasons. With this excuse, tyrants have always been trying to suppress students and student movements throughout history, emphasizing on creating distance and division between students and society. When you go to a university in a tyrannical government, you are always faced with the phrase “university is only a place for studying” and with the use of this phrase, the arms of tyranny prevent any social activities that go against tyranny or the tyrant’s ideology. Under the shadow of this constant suppression, they use their propaganda tools to convince society that “university and student movements are dead”. But can a university or a student movement be killed? Can suppression tools prevent resistance and freedom? Maybe with each suppression, they can silence some students temporarily, but that is the nature of suppression. However, this silence does not
This process has been inevitable throughout the history of despots, from the most kind dictators (!) to the most bloodthirsty totalitarian governments, and the university and student population have always been one of the most influential factors in the downfall of these governments; in fact, despotic governments always intend to eliminate individuality and the identity of the people and as a result, they tend to make decisions for every aspect of their lives, including the position of students who are always seeking answers and advocating for various freedoms, making it important in this context. The student, by fighting for their own freedom and disobedience against orders that are not in line with their logic, proves to society that one must fight for freedom and can stand against tyranny. This is why totalitarian or despotic governments, like the current government of Iran, first impose heavy costs on student activists and then try to create a distance between the university and the streets, or rather, between the student and society, and always tell lies to
