The Pathology of Virtual Education and the Challenges for Teachers / Azizeh Anzari

Education has been a concern since ancient times, and most human societies have paid attention to it. Face-to-face education has been around for years and has always been a source of hope for improving the teaching and training process. Virtual or non-face-to-face education has a significant difference from the face-to-face education process; it is hoped that opportunities that have arisen can be used to improve the education process.

However, since the audience is not cooperating, it is not possible to see a bright future in this regard. It should be noted that these technologies were introduced before the outbreak of the coronavirus, alongside traditional classroom teaching methods, student flash drives, etc., with the aim of improving the quality of teaching and learning. In fact, this method has been and can provide better interactions and more subject references for teachers and students, known as educational technology in schools.

And there are great hopes for the development of our country and the liberation from backwardness and closing the gap between us and developed countries. Of course, good steps have been taken in this direction, as evidenced by the statistics and successful results in international Olympiads.

Unfortunately, virtual education in these two years has faced problems such as:

1- Communication deficiencies

2- Failure to receive a response from the recipient.

3- Lack of control over the environment

It did not have the necessary efficiency and overall causes fatigue and even exhaustion for the teacher, and takes away the enthusiasm of teaching.

There are countless communication problems in relation to the virtual education platform and the Ministry of Education has not been able to provide a complete and flawless platform. All government schools were forced to use the Shad platform last year, while non-government schools were able to use better platforms such as Skype, Zoom, and Adobe Connect. The Shad application had numerous problems and due to daily updates, it was unable to meet the teaching needs of teachers and the downloading and uploading of students’ knowledge. As a result, teachers were unable to establish proper and complete communication with their audience and could not implement the curriculum they had during in-person teaching. In fact, due to the lack of cooperation from the audience and the flaws in the platform, teachers were unable to have the necessary control and supervision over the educational environment, which led to extreme fatigue and loss of enthusiasm compared to in-person teaching.

Among these, what is important is the result and evaluation of students who, in this matter, teachers have faced many problems. Unfortunately, the approach to education in recent years has been focused on results and grades, so students do not show the necessary honesty in this evaluation; from weak students to those who excel in their studies. Therefore, it is still unclear what the future of literacy for the generation of the 1980s and 1990s will be.

Virtual education in our country still requires a lot of time to find its way, because this education is based on theory. We must essentially create conditions in which the possibility of implementing virtual education exists. On the other hand, we must create a foundation for virtual education to be voluntary and a choice. Virtual education is suitable for those who have enough motivation and are seeking personal development; not for those who are forced under pressure to be pushed towards education.

Although virtual education has been expanding worldwide since the 1990s and various platforms have been created to develop it, in our country, due to the weak infrastructure and slow internet speed, this possibility practically does not exist. This particular issue has led to the fact that most teachers provide teaching that is not very effective. It is expected that the instructor will use the facilities of virtual education to provide educational content and also use active teaching methods in a way that instead of being the sole speaker, students can use various features of the web space and learn.

And finally, it is worth mentioning that although virtual or online education has numerous challenges, it is necessary to move towards this direction for the development of the country and for the future perspective.
