Gender equality or gender justice

On December 18, 2019, forty years have passed since the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) or “CEDAW”. This important international document, also known as the “Declaration on the Rights of Women”, presents a deep and extensive concept of gender equality. The concept of continuous equality in CEDAW goes beyond “equal opportunities” or “formal and legal equality”.

If the concept of equality is limited to providing suitable opportunities for women, there is no guarantee that they will be able to benefit from these equal opportunities due to the inequalities that exist in various areas of society. In Article 2 of the CEDAW Convention, governments are obligated to both develop equal laws (formal equality) and ensure the provision of mechanisms for equality to be achieved.
