Public baths; Gender and Sexual Minorities/ Hiraad Aryaafar

Poverty and unemployment, alongside cultural issues, are considered as the main reasons for sexual labor in present-day Iran. It can be said that economic poverty, along with cultural and emotional poverty, has created a suitable environment for sexual labor. Family instabilities, addiction, running away from home, discriminatory laws, and criminalization of non-traditional sexual orientations are among the contributing factors to this social crisis.

Although there is no direct punishment for sexual labor in the Islamic Penal Code, judges use punishments related to “adultery,” “sodomy,” and “crimes against chastity and public morality” to deal with such cases. However, two Islamic solutions have been proposed to solve this social issue: the first solution is to kill and burn sexual laborers and brothels, and the second solution is temporary marriage, polygamy, or forming chaste households.
