Notes on Narratives of Violence in the World and Iran / Elaheh Amani

Violence, assault, and sexual harassment are some of the most heinous forms of human rights violations that continue to occur in the 21st century world, across the globe. While the majority of victims are women and girls, sexual violence also affects men, boys, and individuals with diverse sexual identities. According to the World Health Organization, 35% of women experience physical and sexual violence in their lifetime. Rape, sexual assault, and overall sexual violence have long-term effects on the physical and mental health of the victims.

Globally, women in abusive relationships are more likely to struggle with addiction, depression, alcoholism, HIV, and other social problems. The #MeToo movement has encouraged some victims of sexual crimes and violence to speak out and seek help.

Despite millions of women experiencing violence and sexual assault, only 40% of them report it, according to the United Nations. And less than 10% of those who do report it seek help from the police or law enforcement

Solutions/Strategies

Preventing violence and sexual assault is a key element in respecting women’s human rights. Violence, rape, and sexual assault are reflections of power imbalances and cultural and social norms.
We must understand the reasons and roots of sexual violence and assault. We must recognize the driving forces behind it and address it as a public health issue for the overall well-being of society.
Sexual education, boundaries, and healthy relationships should be taught in schools from a young age to ensure the safety of women, girls, and men. The right to one’s own body and protecting its safety is a human right that should be respected for all generations.
Creating economic opportunities for women and their participation in the economy can also be effective in boosting women’s self-confidence and preventing harm from unhealthy relationships.
Involving men in the fight to end violence against women, especially sexual violence, honor killings, domestic violence, and other forms of violence, and providing educational opportunities for men can be a powerful strategy in reducing violence against women
