Unprecedented drought in Iran; the beginning of a huge and unresolved crisis in the country / Keyumars Amiri
The old farmer stands on the hill overlooking his wheat field, with a hunched posture and clenched fists. He gazes at the plain with sorrow and amazement. As he looks, his eyes fall upon the fields of wheat and barley, now turned yellow and drying up due to lack of rain in the spring season. The patches of clouds that appear in the sky bring a glimmer of hope to the old man’s heart, and he mutters to himself, “Could it possibly rain?” But it is spring, and it has been weeks since any rain has fallen.
Seeing the thirsty fields once again wounds his heart. He lets out a loud sigh and looks around, his eyes working to take in the sight of the wheat and barley fields that have turned yellow due to lack of water. They have lost their last breath and are now drying up and disappearing. Witnessing this scene brings great pain to the farmer. A pain that pierces his soul.
Oh God! All that suffering and effort, all that running and spending time on farming, and now the result is burned and fruitless, as he and millions of other farmers like him have been left with black soil!
He remembers if their lands were not barren and he remembers if that dam was not built and if this well was not dug and… and these destructive actions that, over the course of half a century, have completely changed and caused a crisis in the region’s ecosystem, destroying it to the point where there is no hope left and there is no justice.
His heart tells him that even the sky has turned against them and will no longer rain. He passes through fields of sorrow and grief, witnessing a horrific tragedy and an indescribable tragedy unfolding. The peasant man, who has lost all hope for a livelihood, understands and feels it more than anyone else. He smells it and with all his being, he senses it. He takes the hopeless road home, silently weeping, and goes to face another day without bread or taste, along with his family and millions like him, mourning their losses.
The great and ancient land of Iran has seen and experienced numerous droughts throughout history. These droughts have been temporary, long-lasting, and sometimes unexpected. The history of this problem is such that the kings and nobles of ancient Iran have prayed and requested from the god Ahura Mazda to protect the land of Iran from drought and falsehood.
Drought and lies are two very dangerous calamities for the Earth and humanity. These two terrible phenomena, which have been present in this era of history for almost half a century, have brought destruction and downfall upon the land of Iran and its people.
The history bears witness to the fact that all of those droughts were successfully overcome with the efforts of some wealthy officials and the planning of determined and experienced Iranian people, without leaving behind heavy damages. In other words, with the determination and planning of true Iranians, those droughts were controlled and years full of goodness, blessings, and rainfall arrived once again. The country of Iran was saved from drought and the despair and hopelessness of its people.
But this time, in the past half century, it seems that this great calamity has not left Iran and its people. A calamity that, along with the problems of global warming and the lies of the cold-hearted leaders, officials, engineers, and irresponsible individuals, has continued for almost half a century and is still ongoing. In the current agricultural year, its violence has been fully demonstrated, as farmers in almost all parts of the country did not even harvest a single grain and whatever they had planted was destroyed and lost due to lack of rainfall in the spring. Farmers who planted yellow crops to harvest green vegetables are now faced with black soil and their cries of despair have risen without any justice.
A Look at Iran’s Agriculture and Climate in the Past Half Century
A Look at Agriculture and Climate in Iran Over the Past Half Century is a testament to the bitter and alarming reality that due to various reasons, which will be briefly discussed, the plateau of Iran is on the brink of destruction and the possibility of living in the near future is in danger, according to experts.
Over the past half century, we have witnessed the disappearance and downfall of the Pahlavi dynasty and the emergence of the Islamic Republic in Iran. All the planned projects, even those in progress in the fields of water, land, and agriculture, were abandoned and forgotten by the revolutionaries. They were set aside and left to be forgotten, and after years had passed since the Islamic Revolution and throughout the eight-year Iran-Iraq war, there was no attention given to the important sectors of water, climate, and agriculture in the country. This sector was generally neglected and abandoned, and the officials of the Islamic Republic did not consider it valuable or important. Perhaps it did not even cross their minds. However, at the end of the war, the agricultural sector received some attention, not with a professional and serious approach, but more with a political and opportunistic view. They went towards the agricultural sector, not considering all aspects of water, land, and climate, but rather unintentionally and unfortunately,
Why and how did a country with so many resources and such a large population of 85 million people end up with such a fate? And why has there not been a thorough and scientific investigation yet? However, what is clear and has not been hidden from sight and has not escaped the attention of experts is the depth of the disaster that has affected the environment, climate, and agriculture of Iran over the years.
Unfortunately, after the victory of the Islamic Revolution in 1357 and the rise of Muslim revolutionaries under the command of Ayatollah Khomeini, an organization called “Jihad-e-Sazandegi” was formed alongside the Ministry of Agriculture. This organization, which was formed by inexperienced and non-specialized revolutionary forces, recklessly interfered in water, land, and agricultural affairs. They manipulated and intervened in all aspects, prioritizing the use of underground water resources for agriculture and drinking purposes. The governments at the time also followed this wrong and mistaken policy in the agricultural sector in pursuit of imaginary self-sufficiency. As a result, deep and semi-deep wells were hastily and expensively dug all over the country, to the point where farmers were even encouraged and sometimes forced to dig wells by providing loans. This led to farmers abandoning the use of surface and river water resources and focusing all their efforts on digging deep and semi-deep wells, some of which reached depths of
On the other hand, during the rule of Hashemi Rafsanjani, the government of industrialization took action to build dams on a large scale, under the supervision of unskilled and inefficient military forces of the Revolutionary Guards, and with the direct involvement of military personnel who were responsible for 100% of the study and implementation of dam construction. Worse than that, with a political, self-centered and non-self-centered approach to the provinces, they diverted the water of the Zayandeh Rud River towards the deserts of Yazd, causing the river to dry up. They also diverted the water of the Sirvan River in Kurdistan province, hundreds of kilometers away, by creating columns and pipelines, and multiple pumping stations at a high cost, towards the Abbas plain in the south of the country. Other issues, which are not the subject of discussion here, unfortunately caused extensive changes in the ecosystem of vast areas of the country. The consequences of this were unnatural droughts, destruction,
Nowadays, with a general look at the overall climate situation in Iran, unfortunately we come to the bitter and concerning conclusion that due to inefficient and irresponsible management of the vast forests in the country, which played a major role in keeping the region cool, they have been destroyed and the major rivers have dried up and stopped flowing; many lakes have dried up forever, leading to the death of fish and the extinction of many bird species. The country’s natural resources and thousands of plant and animal species have suffered irreparable damages and most of them have been permanently destroyed, turning the hopes of the nation into despair and greatly reducing the chances of a meaningful life in the country; to the point that it can be said that this has become one of the major causes of suicides, poverty, and addiction in society, as well as many social abnormalities.
Nowadays, experts and opinion leaders in statistics and information express great concern about the state of the weather and the overall quality of life of the nation. They declare that in the field of water, which is the main source of life, Iran has reached the brink of water bankruptcy and has a very worrying future ahead.
However, unfortunately there is no will towards attention and planning to save this large plateau and its inhabitants from this calamity and great problem.
