Book Introduction: Closed World

“The Closed World of Books” is a book by Emad al-Din Baqi and published by Sarayi. Mr. Baqi has spent a long time of his life in prison and has first-hand experience on the subject of his book. The Closed World is intended to delve into the sociology and psychology of prison from within. This book is derived from the heart of Mr. Baqi’s experiences and notes in prison, and during the process of compiling and completing these notes, it has returned as the underlying theme and idea throughout the book, like a thread of prayer beads flowing through all its chapters and sections. In this book, the author attempts to clarify the philosophy of torture and explain the reasons for the legitimacy of a prisoner’s connection to the outside world.

Imad al-Din Baqi, in a note published on his personal website about introducing this book, writes: “If we are to establish a criterion for measuring the quality of justice in a society, perhaps one of the best criteria is the quality and manner of observing the law and justice regarding prisoners and their treatment. Why is such a claim made? Because the government and perhaps society claim that prisoners are punished for violating the law. If this claim is true, then human rights and the rights of prisoners must also be respected in the first place.”

This book is divided into six sections. The first section discusses the concept of “carceralism” and emphasizes that prison is the most tangible and exposed human and cognitive phenomenon for those who are dealing with it from within. The second section, titled “Closed Society and Victims”, consists of five chapters with titles such as “Phenomenology of Prison”, “Prison as a Microcosm of Society”, “Prisoners and Family”, “Concepts of Time, Nature, Life”, and “News and Awareness”. In this closed society, the more closed and confined the environment becomes, the smaller the individual’s unconscious worldview will be.

The third section of the book, “Behavioral and Social Psychology in Prison,” consists of four chapters titled “Hope and Madness – The Prison Syndrome,” “Dreams and Beliefs,” “Work, the Creator of Man,” and “Causes and Sources of Stress.” In these chapters, the issue of the psychological and behavioral problems of prisoners is examined from various angles, from their situation in prison to the reasons for their stress and behavior in life. The fourth section of the book delves into the phenomenon of “prisonization.” This section also consists of three chapters titled “Mutual Action and Complex Relationships between Prisoners and Prison Guards,” “The Ideal Type of Prison Guard,” and “Fear, the Foundation of a Closed Society.” The first chapter discusses the closed society of the prison and the power dynamics between prisoners and prison guards, while the second chapter examines the ideal type of prison guard from the perspective of prison guards. The title of the first chapter may shed light on the context of

In the fifth section, the book also delves into the world of crime and punishment from a sociological and psychological perspective. The sixth section of the book, written by a former prisoner and researcher who has personally experienced the subject matter, focuses on the final chapter of a prisoner’s life in prison; the “End of Prison”. This is the chapter where a prisoner must not only physically leave the prison, but also free themselves from the mental and spiritual space of the prison. It has been observed that many prisoners continue to live with a prison mentality even after their physical release, and this mentality and state of mind can stay with them for years. The author of “World of Closed Doors” emphasizes: “The first release is a departure from normal behavior, a rebellion and uprising. The second release is the prisoner’s departure from the prison, and these two types of release are deeply connected. In most prisons around the world, there is a center called the Post-Release Care Center. But when
