Ya’qub Mehrnahad, a broken pen.
Yaghoub Mehrnahad, a student of political science at the University of Tehran, is the secretary general of the Youth Association for Justice, a journalist and a blogger who was executed in Zahedan Central Prison in August 2008 on charges of armed rebellion.
He has also been referred to as the first executed blogger, and it can boldly be said that Ya’qub Mehrnehad was one of the few elite Balochs who, despite his youth and short life, took on a dangerous and valuable path. He became the voice of justice by founding the Youth Association for Justice in the midst of power struggles with extremist groups, becoming the third voice and a new voice for Baloch youth. The association that Ya’qub had established had become a place for the voices of Baloch youth to be heard.
Jacob annually tried to reconcile the Baloch people with government officials by holding a conference called “Inquisitive Youth, Accountable Officials”. He invited officials to be accountable and encouraged youth to participate in social and political activities, but the security forces never accepted the voice of justice and demands for justice in that region.
He believed that “the only way to create security in the province is through the implementation of true justice, eliminating poverty and discrimination, and eradicating unemployment and illiteracy.” Jacob had even run for the city council in Zahedan in 2006 to achieve these goals, but his qualifications were not accepted. Nevertheless, he continued to emphasize the importance of peaceful struggle.
On the sixth of Ordibehesht month in 1386, Jacob Mehrnahad was arrested along with his brother and several members of the association for organizing a legal conference and writing a critical article on his blog, in which he had criticized local authorities in Sistan and Baluchestan province. After an unfair and illegal judicial process, he was executed on the 14th of Mordad month in 1387.
Mr. Mehrnahad spent 16 months in the cells of the Information Department under intense psychological and physical pressures for false confessions and televised interviews.
It is said that around twenty relatives of the Mehrnahaad were arrested and some were faced with heavy convictions, who were active in the main body and central council of this peaceful and civil institution…
Although Jacob Mehrnehad’s civil and peaceful activities in the troubled land of Balochistan cost him his life, the path he walked and its pioneer have become more prosperous than ever in the Balochistan community…
