Book Introduction: Atlas of Human Rights

Human rights is a term that we have heard a lot about in recent years. Every day, many people around the world become victims of human rights violations and in the media and news, we see a glimpse of the suffering they endure. Unfortunately, in addition to the obvious and public violations of human rights, a significant portion of these rights are violated in a subtle and unnoticed manner, which we may not even be aware of.

Fortunately, recently, with the efforts of two political prisoners in Evin Prison, who unfortunately are also victims of human rights violations, Mr. Mehdi Khodaei (human rights activist) and Omid Kokabi (PhD student in nuclear physics from the University of Texas), the book “Atlas of Human Rights” has been translated into Persian and made available to interested individuals by Armaneshahr Publications in Afghanistan.

This book begins with an introduction by Mr. Abdolfattah Soltani (lawyer and human rights defender imprisoned in Evin Prison) and in eight chapters, it presents a clear and eloquent account of the human rights situation in various countries, without using difficult legal terminology, and with the use of images, statistics, and various tables.

In the first section, political rights, which require the existence of an independent judiciary and also citizenship rights, property and inequality, quality of life based on the principle of dignified living, as well as health and well-being of all individuals, have been examined. The second section, titled Judicial Offenses and Legal Restrictions, first discusses the definition of torture and its use by various governments, and then self-detention is mentioned as a method of political control. This section also discusses one of the oldest human punishments, execution, at the global level, as well as police surveillance as a tool for exerting pressure on citizens. The third section deals with the principle of freedom of expression and the prohibition of censorship. The definition of freedom of expression and censorship of communications in today’s societies by governments and the creation of restrictions on the rights of communities are among the important topics of this section. The fourth section of this book deals with the most important violations of human rights at the international level; genocide, war
