The book “Torturer and Victim: Treatment” is written by French author, Francoise Sironi, and has been translated into Farsi by “Aristo Saeed” and “Forough Ahmadi”.
The translator writes at the beginning of this book: “Torture is examined in this book as a tool of silence, where the torturer tries to use it in the victim’s mind to separate them from the group they are associated with.” In this book, torture is not approached in a “scientific” manner, but rather in a “practical” manner.
The first chapter of this eight-chapter book is titled “Torture: For Confession or for Silence?” In this section, we read about the methods used in torture and the author examines and analyzes them. In the second chapter, the author continues to discuss this topic, but this time combines clinical psychology and the concept of inner personality to analyze “torture methods.”
“Treating Disorders Caused by Trauma” is the title of the third chapter which discusses the effects of torture and the methods of treating disorders caused by it.
Readers of this book can gain a better understanding of topics such as the psychology of torture victims, the psychology of torture and abuse, as well as the psychological aspects of it. For this reason, the author discusses the “torturer’s impact” in the fourth chapter. According to the author, in this chapter, the torturer encounters the methods used during torture to silence the victim and the tools that have been traditionally used and are now used scientifically. When all the threads and knots of the victim’s torture are addressed in therapy, the victim finds peace.
The fifth chapter of this book is titled “Manifestations of Trauma”. This chapter delves into the issues of torturer and victim, and explores the process of recovery for the relationship between the torturer and the victim, serving as a therapeutic roadmap for identifying the torturer within a patient.
The title of the sixth chapter is “The Broken Soul”. In this chapter, the author quotes the torturer’s words to a tortured patient: “He will be broken from within, for we know how to act so that no trace remains. If he takes his own life, he will never forget the price he paid for his bravery…”
In the seventh chapter, it also discusses “The Hard Torturers” and how they become torturers within themselves.
The final section of the book discusses treatment methods for torture, titled “Treatment, the End of Transformation,” which addresses psychological issues.
This book is the result of a practical clinical work that began in the population supporting victims of political pressure in exile and then at the Primo Levi center, which is a center for the treatment of victims of torture and political abuse, in Paris, and was followed up at university centers.
Reading this book, which is currently considered a rare book in Iran, is recommended to all enthusiasts and especially human rights activists.
