Book Introduction: Social Cancer of Corruption

The book “Social Cancer of Corruption”, written by “Farāmarz Rafīʿpūr”, is about Dr. Farāmarz Rafīʿpūr, who is known as one of the most prominent sociologists in recent years and is a professor of sociology at Shahid Beheshti University. He is a member of the Academy of Sciences and was selected as the “Eminent Sociologist” in 1389 (2010) and is often referred to as Professor.

In this book, which, in terms of structure, is similar to many other books by Dr. Rafiepour and also reflects his expertise, the problem of corruption is examined from a sociological perspective and the corruption in the administrative system and Iranian society is described. The author, in six chapters, raises questions such as “What is corruption?”, “What are the causes of corruption?”, “Does such a phenomenon exist in Iran and if so, what is its history?” and seeks answers to these questions.

The first chapter of the book “Social Cancer of Corruption” is about the introduction of the issue of corruption and its consequences. In the second chapter, a theoretical framework is presented to analyze the issue, and the definition of corruption is discussed, along with the factors that contribute to it, particularly in Iran. The third chapter focuses on the research method, which includes a sample of 584 individuals, 455 of whom are ordinary citizens and the rest are employed in the administrative system (employees and managers at various levels of the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Health, and Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs). The next chapter emphasizes the existence of corruption in Iran and examines its history. Additionally, the author, in this chapter, based on media reports, investigates cases of corruption in Iran today (in the government sector, regulatory bodies, and private sector). In the fifth chapter, selected cases of corruption (especially that of Shahram Jazayeri) are identified and analyzed. The sixth and final

In the last chapter of this book, we read: “Corruption is a social cancer that requires deep surgery and various coordinated actions to fight against it. Dealing with social vices must be strong and comprehensive, otherwise it will have a negative impact… To combat corruption, several conditions must be met: strong determination, accurate calculation, having a comprehensive model for managing society, decisive and uncompromising implementation, and accepting pain.”

Despite being written 10 years ago and following the same conservative approach of Dr. Rafiepour, this work is considered by some sociologists to be the first book written in this field and is therefore of great importance. In fact, the author has opened a new field in sociology with this book.
