Book Introduction: Preventing Sexual Abuse of Children

The book “Preventing Sexual Abuse of Children”, translated and summarized from the book “Preventing Sexual Abuse: Activities and Strategies for Those Working with Children and Adolescents” by Carol Plummer, with additional contributions from the translator. The aim of this book is to increase knowledge and necessary skills in identifying sexual abuse against children, as well as empowering children to deal with such issues.

In the preface, we read: “There are thousands of children who are victims of sexual abuse in different corners of the world, who are neither identified nor able to speak up about the crime that has been committed against them.”

The book on preventing sexual abuse of children has six chapters and several appendices.

In the first chapter, under the title “Defining the Problem”, the question “What is child sexual abuse?” is answered. The title of the second chapter is “Where to Begin? From wherever you are!” The author states that two points must be considered for prevention programs: first, adults must educate themselves about this serious social problem, and second, they must take steps to educate children around them about the necessary information and skills to prevent sexual abuse. The third chapter is “Designing and Implementing Prevention Programs” and emphasizes issues such as community support and commitment to reporting any potential child abuse. The fourth chapter is dedicated to “Parental Involvement”. The fifth chapter, titled “Guidelines for Educators”, provides guidelines for teachers, independent instructors, and those working with physically or mentally disabled children and children from broken families. The final chapter is about “Curriculum and Educational Activities for Preschoolers, First Graders, and Children with Special Needs”. Some of these lessons include

At the end and as an attachment, in order to better understand the concepts by the audience, facts about sexual abuse of children along with examples and images have been provided.

The above mentioned book apparently considers preschool and elementary school teachers as its audience, but in reality, families are also its audience. It is recommended for parents of children aged 5 to 9, as well as other individuals who are in contact with children of this age group, and also child rights activists.
