The book “Social Media and Social Capital” is written by Mohammad Reza Haghighi. He has also published other books and articles on social media and the role of mass media in public persuasion. Mohammad Reza Haghighi is a university lecturer and researcher in communication sciences with a PhD in communication sciences.
The mentioned book aims to explore and analyze the concepts of virtual social networks and social capital in 33 chapters. This book can be studied in three separate sections. The author of this book, in the first stage, tries to introduce the global community as a leading community towards the global village. Then, he goes on to address the needs of the global village and ultimately considers the role of social networks as influential. He also considers the role of media and social networks in convincing public opinions as important.
In the introduction of this book, the author familiarizes the reader with issues related to social networks such as politics, culture, economy, and especially security. They generally place today’s world in a state of transformation and movement towards a “global village”, while also disrupting national systems and organizations. This is while they understand the fields within the scope of society as dependent on factors, agents, and effective causes in the realm of social networks. They consider the role of mass media and especially virtual social networks as a major and important role in the current era of social change and transformation.
In the second section of his book, the author delves into the topic of “the information and communication era” and sees the media as conquerors. He considers one of the special functions of the media, especially social media, to be information dissemination and news coverage, which has led to global events and transformations. He also mentions that communication theorists believe that today the world is in the hands of those who control the media. He expands on the major role of the media in shaping public opinion for this reason. He sees three characteristics of timelessness, placelessness, and speed as features of social networks.
The titles of the book include the information society, the infrastructure of the information society, communications and globalization, information literacy, e-government and social media, social capital and its theories, culture and civilization, subcultures, cultural elements, factors influencing culture, national culture, social resources theory, social capital and economic development.
