Introduction to the book “Knot” with a look at early marriage in Iran.

Early marriage is seen in all parts of the world and is by no means a new phenomenon. What is new about this issue is the revelation of its various dimensions and its impact on human society. The answer to the question of why, after centuries of children experiencing marriage, today in the 21st century, the global community strongly opposes this act, is that there are numerous, diverse and different reasons in all parts of the world that lead to early marriage for boys and girls. There are various factors that continue to strengthen this practice and lead to the perpetuation of child marriage. On the other hand, early marriage is a general concept that brings with it consequences, effects and other phenomena. Therefore, it is better to look at early marriage as a cycle of life. When a child gets married, a cycle or wheel begins, in which the individual must first strive to maintain the family lineage, have children, and prepare for the future needs of the new family. In these circumstances, other difficulties

The global society considers child marriage as a form of violence and abuse. Many international organizations believe that child marriage can lead to early physical and sexual violence, exploitation, human trafficking, and other factors that contribute to its occurrence.

Years ago, perhaps even less than a decade, whispers about the issue of child marriage in Iran began to arise. From that time until now, a large number of theses, research papers, and books have been written, and high-ranking officials and media outlets have become aware of the importance of this issue and the rights of children. Although early marriage is just one of many topics in the field of children’s rights, it alone encompasses many aspects of children’s lives.

The book “Knot” seeks to depict the statistical and legal changes in the field of early marriages in Iran, without considering the situation of other countries. Despite the increased awareness of the harm caused by early marriages in recent years compared to the past, there are still blind spots that require future generations to open their eyes to. In an interview with the author, a person from villages in East Azerbaijan shares their personal experience. They were unable to understand the reasons behind the eagerness of their village people to marry off their daughters at a young age, despite discussing it with their family and relatives. Most of the women in the village were married early and had grandchildren by the age of thirty-five. Newly married girls continued to attend school every morning, while their mothers, due to their physical weakness and young age, struggled with household chores until noon and then returned home when their daughters came back from school. The fear of not finding a suitable match for their daughters made families more eager to marry them off.

It seems that even in the present era, there are still questions that remain strong and child marriage should be considered as the most prominent issue in matters related to children’s rights. As long as this neglected issue is not resolved, talking about children’s rights in our country is difficult. The writer has tried to bring up historical questions in the current conditions of our country and by presenting documents, statistics, and interviews published by officials in recent years, create a bridge between the past and present. From the writer’s perspective, the issue of child marriage has not suddenly entered Iranian culture and will not suddenly fade away without any effort towards cultural reform; because it has not even been hidden from the eyes of travel writers. Contemporary writers have the duty of travel writers for future generations; the future reads and judges about the past. The present time is a trust in the hands of the future. If a realistic image of the present is not presented, how can the future have a fair judgment about this trust?
