Book Introduction: Blood and Earth
“Blood and Earth” is a non-fiction work that examines two crises, “human trafficking” and “environmental destruction”, in relation to each other.
As a prominent expert on fighting human trafficking, the author addresses these questions in his book: “Where does slavery exist? Where does reckless environmental destruction occur?” He embarks on incredible journeys to find answers and shows that in many parts of the world, there are new forms of slavery that pose a great threat to the environment. Kevin Bales argues that ending “modern slavery” can make a huge difference in the health of our planet. He says we should think of slavery as carbon dioxide for a country!
He shows that many of today’s products in the market, from computers to shrimp and jewelry, are the result of modern slavery. He writes that the classic story of slavery has ended with its abolition, but according to global slavery index, research shows that millions of people around the world are still living under various forms of slavery. Although they are not bought and sold as property of the owner, the freedom of victims is taken away in various forms; they cannot leave their work and are exploited, controlled and exploited at a high level.
The global slavery index includes construction workers and servants in countries surrounding the Persian Gulf, one million Uzbeks in former Soviet satellite cotton farms, child brides, victims of sex trafficking, agricultural workers in Mauritania who work for others, and children from Haitian villages sent to work for families in the city. Of course, Bill does not know how many modern slaves are involved in his discussion, but estimates that a large number of miners, charcoal burners, and fishermen, who are forced into slavery due to debt or the coercion of warlords, make up a population of about 35 million. He says that about 40% of deforestation is carried out by non-free workers.
Kevin Bales, one of the founders of the “Free the Slaves” group and author of seven other books on the subject, believes that environmental destruction deprives humans of their traditional way of life and drives them towards exploitation. Some of the industries that are destructive to the environment, such as those that produce high levels of greenhouse gases, enslave them. These industries include illegal logging and destruction of tropical forests, illegal gold mining and other mineral extraction, illegal fishing, brick kilns, and the like. Therefore, we must “Free the Slaves” in order to preserve the environment.
The author concludes his book with a narrative of an exciting anti-slavery ceremony at an elementary school in Brazil: Children are shouting, “No to slavery!” and the author assures us that they know the solution and “we just have to walk with them.”
The book “Blood and Earth” is the result of seven years of travel and research by the author, telling a tragic story of the most beautiful and yet sorrowful places in the world. This book, which has 304 pages and has been published in English, can be purchased through online stores such as Amazon.
