Book Introduction: Group Freedoms (Freedom of Assembly, Demonstration, Association, and Union)

“Group freedoms” include things such as freedom of assembly, demonstrations, parties, and unions, which fall under the category of the right to political participation. Jean Dufour, the author of the book “Group Freedoms (Freedom of Assembly, Demonstrations, Associations, and Unions)”, examines the legal rights that take on a group aspect. His book encompasses legal discussions and Dufour strives to express fundamental points about group freedoms in a simple and concise language.

Group freedoms are introduced in two sections in this book. The first section is dedicated to temporary gatherings and the second section focuses on institutional gatherings. This book provides a clear picture of the state of group freedoms in France and the legal geography of the European Union.

Dr. Ali Akbar Gorji Andarjani, a writer and professor of law at Shahid Beheshti University, in the analytical and detailed preface he has written as a translator at the beginning of this work, states: “Group freedoms include things such as freedom of assembly, demonstrations, parties, and unions. In a sense, these rights can be categorized as a broader right called the right to political participation, as citizens directly participate in determining their political and social fate through exercising these rights and freedoms, and intervene in the design or change of the social and political environment. Therefore, without recognizing these freedoms, talking about concepts such as democracy and popular participation in political and social affairs would be meaningless. In this way, group freedoms can also be considered as essential components of a democratic society, just like individual freedoms. If the emergence of a democratic society is not possible without recognizing individual rights and freedoms such as the right to human dignity, equality, freedom of thought and expression, and

Dr. Gorji has also stated in an interview with the Iranian Book News Agency (IBNA) about this book: “The author of this book has presented strategies that leaders can use to give freedom to social groups in a way that does not harm the credibility and political stability of society.”

The most important strength of the book can be considered as its reliance on the opinions and practices of judicial institutions and human rights. The author, with his unparalleled mastery of human rights practices, documents all his analyses in accordance with French or European judicial practices, including the European Court of Human Rights, the Constitutional Council, the Council of State, and the Supreme Court of the country.

It should be noted that Professor Jean Dufour has other works besides the aforementioned book, in which he discusses people’s organizations as one of the most important non-governmental actors.
